This is home. The boat lives on Gellatly Road and the fishing starts about four minutes after we untie.
Where we actually are
Okanagan Bucktail Co. is based at the West Kelowna Yacht Club, 4111 Gellatly Road. Not a meeting point we drive to, not a launch we borrow for the season. If you live in West Kelowna you are probably five minutes from the boat right now.
That matters more than it sounds. It means Geoff is on this water constantly rather than occasionally, and that trips can be moved on short notice when the weather turns, because nothing has to be towed anywhere first.
The water out the front
The stretch off Gellatly, out past Gellatly Bay and running south towards Peachland, is water we fish more than any other. Over forty years you learn where the bait sits at different times of year, which shorelines hold fish when the wind is up, and which stretches are a waste of a morning.
You cannot get that from a chart or a fish finder. It is the difference between trolling and catching, and it is the only real advantage a guide has to offer on a lake this size.
Locals fish the cold months
Visitors book in July. People who live here book in January. From October through April the big rainbows come up out of the depths to chase kokanee, the lake empties of other boats, and the fishing is the best it gets all year.
The boat is heated and covered, so the cold is a reason to come rather than a reason to stay home. If you have lived here for years and never fished the lake properly in winter, that is the trip to take.
Short notice and short trips
Being local means we can sometimes fill a gap at short notice. If the forecast comes good and you can get to Gellatly Road in half an hour, it is worth a call rather than assuming we are booked.
The half day at $500 is the one most West Kelowna guests take. Four hours, back before the day is gone, and the same water and the same flies as the full day.
Which trip to book
Most people start with the half day at $500. If a genuinely big rainbow is the goal, book the full day at $800 and come between October and April. Either way you will want a BC freshwater licence before you arrive, and it is worth a look at the wind and feeding times when you are choosing a date.

Quickly. The water we fish starts more or less out the front, so there is very little running compared with a trip that has to travel to reach its lake.
Can you take a last-minute booking?
Sometimes. Being based here means gaps can be filled at short notice, so it is worth calling rather than assuming the day is gone.

$500 for a half day and $800 for a full day, per boat rather than per person, with all the gear and our own hand-tied bucktails included.
