About

Forty years on this water

Okanagan Bucktail Co. is Captain Geoff Hartland, one very well-used boat, and a fly box nobody else has.

The Okanagan Bucktail Co. boat on an Okanagan Lake shoreline

Captain Geoff

Geoff has been fishing the Okanagan and British Columbia for more than forty years. He knows these lakes the way you only can after decades of being on them in every season and every kind of weather, including all the days that did not work.

Starting this business was a natural fit for me. I've always loved taking friends and family out on the water, creating countless memories and first-time experiences. Now, I get to do that every day for my clients.

Captain Geoff

That is genuinely how the boat runs. A lot of our guests have never fished before, and a lot of them are children. Geoff would rather spend a day teaching a ten year old to hold a rod than run a silent charter for experts.

What we are trying to do

Our mission is to give anglers of every level an unforgettable day, while looking after the water it depends on. We fish sustainably and we talk to guests about why that matters, because the twenty pound rainbows this lake is famous for do not appear from nowhere and they do not survive careless handling.

Nothing beats the Okanagan. Its water, its fish, and its one-of-a-kind beauty. We would like it to still be like this in forty years.

The boat

A covered, heated aluminum boat set up specifically for trolling: downriggers, line-counter reels, planer boards and room for a maximum of four guests to fish properly without lines crossing. The heat is not a luxury item, it is the reason we can fish the October to April trophy season properly while most boats in the valley are on the hard.

For groups of five to eight we run a tandem charter with a second boat rather than overloading one.

Where we fish

Okanagan Lake is home, and we launch from the West Kelowna Yacht Club on Gellatly Road. We also run Kalamalka, Wood, Shuswap, Mabel, Skaha and Osoyoos depending on the season and what you want to catch.
