Fishing Kalamalka Lake
Kalamalka sits just south of Vernon and looks nothing like Okanagan Lake. It is a marl lake, which is why it turns that famous turquoise in summer, and the clarity changes how you have to fish it.
Clear water means longer leaders, longer lines behind the boat and more attention to how close you run. It also holds a good head of rainbow trout along with lake trout, and it fishes well at times of year when the big lake is quiet.
Kalamalka trips run as a full or half day the same as Okanagan Lake. Because of the drive and the tow, we ask for a bit more notice on these.
How we fish it
The same way we fish everywhere: trolling our own hand-tied bucktails, with downriggers when the fish are deep and flat lines when they are up.
